It's a pity this book wasn't picked up by a major publishing house but by the anonymous New Generation Publishing, since obviously no editing or proofreading was done (there are some minor mistakes). Nevertheless this thick volume is one of the best (gay) historical romances you can find and obviously much thought and research was spent on it.Jesse, living in Bath in the 18th century, raises a scandal when he is found making out with the brother of his wife. He then escapes to sea and works on a merchant ship, where he gets romantically involved with the captain, Jan. Jan is the love of Jesse's life. Together they survive a shipwreck and after some complications Jesse follows Jan to Holland, where Jan becomes a very successful smuggler. Jan then develops mania and Jesse has to cure his sick lover as he has to take over the smuggling. After both are caught by the British government, Jan is senteced to death while Jesse is condemned to work as a slave in America. His adventures take him to a Native American tribe, back to Holland, then to Cornwall and finally to a British island.
A lot of things happen to Jesse during the book - deaths of loved ones, disasters, hardships, but one constant in his life is love and friendship. And everything that happens just as Jesse's reactions feels very real, authentic and reasonable, not taken to the hilt to be melodramatic. The book is epic in its proportions and style. Especially while Jesse serves at sea, gets to know Jan and survives the shipwreck the writing reminded me very much of Jack London and all of the characters - even the minor ones - are very well crafted.
I found the ending to be curious, since Jesse isn't left in a happy (sexual) relationship, but rather a chaste friendship. Maybe after all he has suffered, sex isn't important anymore.
If you want to read of gay love free of contemporary cliches and transformed into something epic and grand just like in Brokeback Mountan this book is for you. If you just want to read a very good and very gripping (gay) historical adventure-romance this book is worth buying, too.
